Ms. Akiba received the Student Presentation Award at the Physical Society of Japan 2020 Annual(75th)Meeting. /
On Friday, May 22, 2020, Ms. Yuri Akiba(graduated from the Department of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences) (academic supervisor: Prof. Hiroyuki Shima, Faculty of Life and Environment), a second-year PhD student in the Environmental and Social Systems Course of the Faculty of Engineering, was awarded the 75th Annual Meeting of the Physical Society of Japan Convention (2020) Student Award for Excellence in Presentation, Area 11. This award is given to an outstanding young researcher who may contribute to the revitalization of the Physical Society of Japan.
The theme of the presentation is “Is the cooling rate related to the fracture shape of igneous rocks? ”Although an igneous rock is a rock that is formed when magma cools and hardens, it has a prismatic structure called a “columnar node”. The research results indicate that these columnar nodes have universal properties that do not depend on conditions such as cooling rate or chemical composition of the rock.
“I am very happy to receive this award,” said Dr. Akiba. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the professors and laboratory members for their guidance and cooperation. Encouraged by this award, I will continue to work hard.”
