A paper by Assoc. Prof. Junpei Miyake, “Cellulose Proton Conductor: Both Sulfonic Acid and Hydrophobic Group Functionalization Enable High Proton Conductivity“, published in JACS Au (American Chemical Society), was selected to be featured on the supplementary cover of the journal.

Proton conductive polymers are applicable to many fields including clean energy converting devices. In this paper, Dr. Miyake succeeded in the development of a novel, facile and effective synthetic method of proton conductive polymers based on biomass cellulose. Dr. Miyake commented that the novel cellulose PEMs (proton exchange membranes) exhibit excellent proton conductivity (comparable to Nafion, benchmark PEM) despite its facile synthetic procedure and will pioneer a novel trend to develop environmentally friendly-proton conductive polymers.
