A paper by Prof. Katsuyoshi Kakinuma of? the Clean Energy Research Center and Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Nanomaterials Center and Master course student of Ryuji Ohno, “Development of Polymer Composite Membranes with Hydrophilic TiO2 Nanoparticles and Perfluorosulfonic Acid-Based Electrolyte for Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells Operating over a Wide Temperature Range ”was published in ACS Applied Energy Materials by the American Chemical Society, and was selected to be featured on the supplementary cover of the journal. In this paper, the invention of a new electrolyte for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) was reported, based on their new concepts for composite materials. The electrolyte has some potential to improve the high proton conductivity in wide temperature range up to 120oC. The electrolyte membrane will apply to the heavy-duty vehicles, such as trucks, buses and ships besides passenger cars. Prof. Kakinuma commented that this new membrane will contribute to the accomplishment of a wide spread use of PEFC in the near future.
